Amy Curry thinks her life sucks. Her mom decides to move from California to Connecticut to start anew–just in time for Amy’s senior year. Her dad recently died in a car accident. So Amy embarks on a road trip to escape from it all, driving cross-country from the home she’s always known toward her new life. Joining Amy on the road trip is Roger, the son of Amy’s mother’s old friend. Amy hasn’t seen him in years, and she is less than thrilled to be driving across the country with a guy she barely knows. So she’s surprised to find that she is developing a crush on him. At the same time, she’s coming to terms with her father’s death and how to put her own life back together after the accident. Told in traditional narrative as well as scraps from the road–diner napkins, motel receipts, postcards–this is the story of one girl’s journey to find herself.
This is the most fun I have had in awhile! Seriously. Amy & Roger’s Epic Detour by Morgan Matson may have touched on some hard topics but for the most part it was just a Fun read. I found myself laughing out loud more than once.
Amy and Roger were both fantastic characters. They were funny and interesting and they had just the right amount of problems to keep you wondering about them. Actually, they really reminded me of my husband and I when we first met.
All of the people they met along the road were great. They really brought something extra to the story. Made it even more fun. If that were possible.
I really loved the added touch of the scraps from the road. There were page of just receipts and pictures. That really brought the story to life. Morgan Matson really kept things interesting on what could have been a boring road trip. With all the fast food references, out of the way stops, and playlists there was never a dull moment.
As you can see, I really loved Amy & Roger’s Epic Detour. It was fun. It was heartbreaking at times. It was exactly what I wanted to read. I just didn’t know about it. I urge you to read this book. Join Amy and Roger on the road. You will have a blast!
