Fans of The Twilight Saga will be enthralled by this riveting story of Bree Tanner, a character first introduced in Eclipse, and the darker side of the newborn vampire world she inhabits. In another irresistible combination of danger, mystery, and romance, Stephenie Meyer tells the devastating story of Bree and the newborn army as they prepare to close in on Bella Swan and the Cullens, following their encounter to its unforgettable conclusion.
I’m going to take a cue from Carla at The Crooked Shelf and say that using the word “review” when referring to this post is a little misleading. I’m not objective. As you can probably gather from the whole Twilight Takeover thing….I love the series. The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner by Stephenie Meyer would have to be horrendous for me to say a bad thing….Edward would have to die at the end for me to stop being objective. With that being said here are my thoughts on the book.
Bree was an afterthought in Eclipse. The one scene that we see her in is a very very important scene, but that really has nothing to do with her. My first time reading Eclipse I wanted her to live. To become part of the Cullen’s coven but we all know that didn’t happen. And the other times I have read it I really paid Bree no attention. Stephenie Meyer did, and I’m happy about that.
The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner starts out about a week and a half(I think! The days really blurred together because of that no sleeping thing) before the big battle. We get a in depth look at the goings on of “bad vampire” I loved it! Of course it’s nice to not kill humans and everything but sometimes a vampire just needs to be a vampire. Lots of innocents died horribly in the process of this book. Stephenie had no qualms when it came to writing the opposite of vegetarian vampires. There is a very dark part of me that gets joy from vampire killings. My need for them was definitely met in this book!
Bree is a very likable character. She had almost zero back story, but she still managed to fill up the pages completely. There was small (tiny) romance in the book but it was very much on the back burner. Also, there was a new character introduced that I am DYING to see more of! Please Stephenie Meyer write more! If you have already read the book, you know who I’m talking about.
The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner really, really picked up steam in the last half. All the stuff with the Cullens that happens in Eclipse was fantastic in this book. You really got to see it in a whole new light. There was even a few things that we didn’t know about! For some reason, reading the last scenes made me want to be in Edward’s head so bad! Now, not only do I need Midnight Sun but I want Eclipse from Edward’s POV too! I’m so needy!
The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner was like a backstage pass. A glimpse into a different lifestyle than the Cullen’s. I’m not going to tell you to read it, because if you are a Twilight fan, of course you will read it! But I will say that I really enjoyed it. It was fantastic to see the story through Bree’s eyes and get another prospective!
