New from #1 New York Times bestselling author Meg Cabot, a dark, fantastical story about this world . . . and the underworld.
Though she tries returning to the life she knew before the accident, Pierce can’t help but feel at once a part of this world, and apart from it. Yet she’s never alone . . . because someone is always watching her. Escape from the realm of the dead is impossible when someone there wants you back.
But now she’s moved to a new town. Maybe at her new school, she can start fresh. Maybe she can stop feeling so afraid.
Only she can’t. Because even here, he finds her. That’s how desperately he wants her back. She knows he’s no guardian angel, and his dark world isn’t exactly heaven, yet she can’t stay away . . . especially since he always appears when she least expects it, but exactly when she needs him most.
But if she lets herself fall any further, she may just find herself back in the one place she most fears: the Underworld.
Can you believe that this is the first book I have ever read by Meg Cabot?! How did that happen? I don’t know, but I can’t think of a better way to be introduced to her than Abandon. It was a completely gripping and uncommon tale!
Pierce is a very, very unique character. Everyone thinks she’s crazy. Dying will do that to you, but she’s not crazy, maybe just a little strange. Pierce has her fair share of quirks and it was a wild ride being in her head. She seems very realistic and she kinda jumps off the page at you. I haven’t read a book with such a alive character in awhile.
Books based off mythology seem to be popular right now, but this was a great take the story of Persephone and Hades. It was a very modern day retelling with a great setting and engaging characters. My one and only complaint is that the pacing was just a tiny bit slow, but Pierce’s hints and glimpses kept me flipping pages.
Overall, Abandon was a wonderful start to a trilogy! I can’t wait to find out more. And get to know John a little better!
