This page-turning debut novel will entice fans who like their paranormal romances dark and disturbing. It’s a natural next-read for fans of Stephanie Meyer, Carrie Jones, and Becca Fitzpatrick. But instead of mythical creatures, blood magic has everything to do with primal human desires like power, wealth, and immortality. Everywhere Silla Kennicott turns she sees blood. She can’t stop thinking about her parents alleged murder-suicide. She is consumed by a book filled with spells that arrives mysteriously in the mail. The spells share one common ingredient: blood, and Silla is more than willing to cast a few. What’s a little spilled blood if she can uncover the truth? And then there’s Nick—the new guy at school who makes her pulse race. He has a few secrets of his own and is all too familiar with the lure of blood magic. Drawn together by a combination of fate and chemistry, Silla and Nick must find out who else in their small Missouri town knows their secret and will do anything to take the book and magic from Silla.
Wow! I really don’t remember the last time I read a story this rich. It honestly appealed to me on every level. It’s filled with flawed, realistic characters. The atmosphere is so lush, it almost feels like you could reach out and touch the headstones in Silla and Nicholas’ cemetery. It’s almost creepy in this surreal way, but Blood Magic also has one of the best romances I have read in a long time. That’s not even mentioning the magic!
This book is magic. It completely swept me away from the very first sentence. This world that Tessa Gratton has created is one of the most unique I have ever read. I absolutely love the idea of blood magic. It’s not fluffy charming spells by any means. Nope, it’s gritty and even a little gross at times, but the results were mesmerizing! I was just as intrigued by the magic as Silla and Reese. I couldn’t wait to find out what the limits were, just like them. This made me connect to the story instantly.
Like I said earlier all the characters were flawed, but in beautiful ways. Silla has just lost her parents in a horrifying way, and her grief and need for understanding came through perfectly. Nicholas has also had his fair share of heartache and his anger at the world is very believable. I absolutely loved Silla and Nicholas and I especially loved their intense connection to each other. Their romance was sexy and trilling. I want to read more about it NOW!
I loved the way the story was told. There are journal entries interspersed throughout the story and they brought so much more dept to it. The way it all unfolded was flawless. The story is also told from both Silla and Nick’s perspective and that put a completely different spin on things as well.
Can you tell I just really loved Blood Magic. I hope so! I don’t think my review does it justice at all. You really must read it and discover the magic for yourself. If this first book is any indication I think this series will be on my favorites list.
