Blogger Tips and Tricks is a new semi regular feature where I will try to shine some light on some little known blogger things and maybe give you a few how to’s.
This week I want to talk just a little bit about the evils the pros and cons of word verification. This post might be a little one sided or biased but these are my opinions based on my experience.
Cons of word verification on comments:
Fist and foremost it’s annoying and off putting for readers. Not all readers of course, but I think readers might appreciate it more and comment more if you didn’t have it. Plus if you have your comments set up so they are embedded under your posts and have verification sometimes commenters might click away from your blog without ever realizing that the verification was about to pop up. So if you do have it and want to keep it you should set it up so that your comments are in a pop up window. That makes verification easier at least.
Another con is that it does not work well with mobile templates. If you have mobile templates set up on your blog you might want to think of turning WV off because it makes commenting from a phone very difficult.
Okay I think that covers the cons, let’s talk about pros….
…..Umm….hmmm.. No really, I honestly can not tell you a solid pro to having it. Not one. I guess you are think ‘but what about spam, Lori?’ Well, let me tell you my story with spam. The first year and a half of my blog I was getting tons of spam. Tons. I would wake up and have to delete at least 4-5 comments every morning. I tried out WV but the number of comments I received went down and I didn’t like that. Then I tried out comment moderation on posts older than 7 days and that worked great. I still use it, but the occasional spam comment still slipped through unfortunately. Then Blogger implemented their spam control and I rarely have a problem anymore. I might get one spam comment a month, if that.
So I think moderation and Blogger’s spam control really made word verification obsolete….
