Luis Fuentes has always been sheltered from the gang violence that nearly destroyed his brothers’ lives. But that didn’t stop him from taking risks—whether he’s scaling a mountain in the Rockies or dreaming of a future as an astronaut, Luis can’t stop looking for the next thrill.
Nikki Cruz lives her life by three rules—boys lie to get their way, don’t trust a boy who says “I love you,” and never date a boy from the south side of Fairfield. Her parents may be from Mexico, but as a doctor’s daughter, she has more in common with her north-side neighbors than the Latino Blood at her school. Then she meets Luis at Alex’s wedding, and suddenly, she’s tempted to break all her rules.
Getting Nikki to take a chance on a southsider is Luis’s biggest challenge, until he finds himself targeted by Chuy Soto, the new head of the Latino Blood. When Chuy reveals a disturbing secret about Luis’s family, the youngest Fuentes finds himself questioning everything he’s ever believed to be true. Will his feelings for Nikki be enough to stop Luis from entering a dark and violent world and permanently living on the edge?
Oh those Fuentes boys…Alex, Carlos, and now Luis…They are absolute trouble, but oh so much fun. Chain Reaction, the third and sadly last edition in the Perfect Chemistry trilogy is just as utterly captivating and heart stopping as the first two.
These are books that make me giggle and swoon and make me frustrated beyond belief at these characters (in a good way). I think Chain Reaction‘s story arc was just a tad bit different (if I remember correctly) in that the the love interests, Luis and Nikki, weren’t completely at odds throughout the book. I loved that! There was some much tension–sexual and just plain tension–between them that it was so fun to get to see them together, but know there are things going on that will come between them.
Nikki was a headstrong and sometimes frustrating character, but she had very valid reasons for her trust issues. It wasn’t just that a boy did her wrong and that brought a lot of depth to her character. Luis, Luis, Luis…oh Luis. You were the baby and the good kid, but you definitely aren’t any more. Luis is crazy smart, but he still makes dumb decisions like any other teenager. Except his might have more dire consequences. Luis was fantastically done. I think he might be my second favorite brother after Alex.
You might be wondering about the sexiness factor? Rest assured that it is 100% there. Simone Elkeles knows how to write sexy scenes with grace and finesse, but they will still make you drool (ungracefully). Really, Elkeles has a talent for writing steamy but real romance like no other author in the YA genre.
As you can tell I loved Chain Reaction. It was compelling and unputdownable. I’m very sad that the trilogy is over but I can’t wait to see what kind of Awesomeness Simone has in store for us next. If you have started this trilogy, do so NOW. You can thank me later.
