Review: Cold Kiss by Amy Garvey

Release Date: September 20, 2011
Age Group: Young Adult
Received From: Netgalley
IBSN: 9780061996221
Blurb:
“It seemed so right. Danny was mine, I was his, and that wasn’t going to work if he was dead. So I would make him not dead, not anymore. I didn’t think any further than what it would feel like to kiss him again, to wrap my arms around him and bury my head against his shoulder.
That was my first mistake. It also turned out to be the biggest.”

When her boyfriend, Danny, is killed in a car accident, Wren can’t imagine living without him. Wild with grief, she uses the untamed powers she’s inherited to bring him back. But the Danny who returns is just a shell of the boy she once loved.

Wren has spent four months keeping Danny hidden, while her life slowly unravels around her. Then Gabriel DeMarnes transfers to her school and somehow, inexplicably, he can sense her secret. Wren finds herself drawn to Gabriel, who is so much more alive than the ghost of the boy she loved. But Wren can’t turn her back on Danny or the choice she made for him—and she realizes she must find a way to make things right, even if it means breaking her own heart.

Amy Garvey’s transcendent teen debut is perfect for fans of Shiver and Beautiful Creatures. Wren’s unforgettable voice and story will stay with readers long after the last page is turned.

To be honest my expectations weren’t very high for this book. The premise sounds intriguing and I love the cover, but I was seeing some mixed reviews about it. That made me a little wary. Those feelings were totally unjustified and it only took me reading a few pages to realize I was going to love this book.

This book isn’t your typical YA paranormal romance. Not at all. It’s a little bit on the darker side and it deals heavily with Wren’s grief and bad decisions. But not so heavily that it’s depressing. Wren’s boyfriend, her first love dies in a car wreak. Wren does what a lot of people would do…if they had the power. She brings him back. But the book is more about her internal struggle to come to terms with his death.

Wren was very fascinating. She was tough, but also a little weak. Not in a bad way. I think most people would do the same exact things in her position. She was very dynamic. She is also very powerful, but the power is kind of subtle. There isn’t a huge amount of significance put on that aspect of the story, but it’s a quiet undercurrent throughout the book.

Danny was creepy. From the get go. He wasn’t the kind of raised from the dead brain eating zombie that you usually encounter (although I hope that you don’t encounter many zombies…). I think he was even eerier than that. This type of…zombie–I really don’t even like using that word for him, it just doesn’t feel right. Let’s say undead, okay? This type of undead is more based of voodoo legends and necromancy, instead of the shambling dead from the horror movies. He was the Danny that Wren knew…but he wasn’t. He was loving and completely devoted to her…until he wasn’t. This book is a very subtle kind of creepy. I loved that.

Amy Garvey’s writing is really fantastic! I loved the prose and just the overall atmosphere she created with her words. I just really loved this book. Can you tell? That just goes to show that I should never let mixed reviews dissuade me and you shouldn’t either. Read this!

On a side note…has anyone heard anything about a sequel? I was really satisfied with the ending and the book can definitely stand alone, but there were a few things that weren’t cleared up. I wouldn’t mind a sequel…

Review: Past Perfect by Leila Sales

Release Date: October 4, 2011
Age Group: Young Adult
Received from: Publisher
IBSN: 9781442406827
Blurb:

All Chelsea wants to do this summer is hang out with her best friend, hone her talents as an ice cream connoisseur, and finally get over Ezra, the boy who broke her heart. But when Chelsea shows up for her summer job at Essex Historical Colonial Village (yes, really), it turns out Ezra’s working there too. Which makes moving on and forgetting Ezra a lot more complicated…even when Chelsea starts falling for someone new.
Maybe Chelsea should have known better than to think that a historical reenactment village could help her escape her past. But with Ezra all too present, and her new crush seeming all too off limits, all Chelsea knows is that she’s got a lot to figure out about love. Because those who don’t learn from the past are doomed to repeat it….

Do you ever pick up a book that is just perfect for you? It’s exactly what you wanted at that moment even if you didn’t realize it? That’s what Past Perfect was for me. I really needed to read something fun and smart. I just didn’t know it.

I read Mostly Good Girls by Leila Sales last year and absolutely loved it. I was definitely anxious to read this one and it didn’t disappoint. I sat down to start this one on a whim–because I was actually in the middle of another book–and devoured half of it in one sitting. I was having such a good time reading it that I forgot to do laundry…and sleep!

I really can’t say enough good things about this book. I loved every part of it. Chelsea was super witty and smart. I giggled often. I loved the ice cream rating aspect of the story and I was absolutely crazy about Essex and all of the historical interpreter details. I mean really, how can you go wrong with a snarky historical interpreter as a protagonist? Exactly, you can’t! I also loved that Sales put a lot of effort into the other characters. Between Chelsea’s quirky and annoying dad to her afraid of commitment best friend. Every single character in the story was very well developed.

Romance really doesn’t play as big a role as I was expecting and I am 100% fine with that. The story didn’t need more romance because Chelsea, Essex, and the War were so fascinating all on their own. The flirtation between Chelsea and her love interest was very fun, though. It left me grinning on many occasions. I also really liked the tension between Chelsea and Ezra. The story really focuses on Chelsea finding herself more than anything else. She makes some dumb mistakes along the way, but the journey is a fun one.

I feel like I have said fun a lot in this review, but I don’t care because that is the best word I can use to describe it. You guys really must read it! Soon.

Top Ten Tuesday!! Ten Books I Want to Reread

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by the awesome people at The Broke and the Bookish

This week’s topic is Top Ten Books I Want to Reread. That is a super easy topic for me! I love to reread, but I don’t get to much anymore because of reviews books and such. So, the books I want to reread have been piling up for awhile. Here they are in no particular order:

1. Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling
Of course this is on my list. How could it possibly not be on my list? If I didn’t have a blog to keep up and review books to read I would probably just read these over and over and over. I have reread some of them but not all. At the beginning of the year I read 1-3 again, and I have Deathly Hallows twice, but that’s it. I would really love to sit and read the entire series straight through again.

2. The Other Boleyn Girl by Phillipa Gregory
I read this before I was blogging. It was right before the movie released (and I still haven’t saw the movie) and I was intrigued. I fell head over heels with it and devoured all of Gregory’s other Tudors books shortly thereafter. I’m not a big fan of historical, but this book was amazing for me. I would love to read it again.

3. Please Ignore Vera Dietz by A.S. King
I only read this last year, but it was my second favorite book of 2010. It blew me away with its uniqueness and genius!

4. The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
Eeek! Can you believe I’ve only read this once?! I have read Catching Fire twice, but not this one. I do plan to reread before the movie is released, though!

5. Graceling & Fire by Kristen Cashore
I just really, really love these books. I don’t see how anyone can not love them! I think I will definitely have to read them again before Bitterblue comes out.

6. Delirium by Lauren Oliver
This was my favorite read from last year. I loved it and it maybe killed me, but I would read it again in a heartbeat.

7. Lips Touch: Three Times by Laini Taylor
Since reading Daughter of Smoke and Bone I have been craving more of Laini’s writing. This book is so beautiful.

8. The Time Traveler’s Wife by Audrey Niffenegger
This book really did utterly destroy me. I cried more during this book than any other book ever. I’m talking like the last 100 pages straight and it was snotty boohoo crying too. But I would totally do it again. That’s how good this book is.

9. Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater
I adore this series and Shiver still stands as my favorite. It was completely beautiful and original. I would love to dive into it all again.

10. Breaking Dawn by Stephenie Meyer
Are you thinking ‘OMG eww’ right now? Well, my reason for wanting to reared this is that I have reread all the others a million times, really..more than I have ever reread any other books. But this one is a different case entirely. I read it very quickly. I got it at midnight on its release and had it finished within 24 hours. I was left feeling a little….unsatisfied and confused much like many other people. I haven’t touched it since, but I’ve always wondered it I sat down to read it slowly and without HUGE expectations if I would have a different perspective. Maybe one day I will try.
