From master storyteller Melina Marchetta comes an exhilarating new fantasy springing from her celebrated epic, Finnikin of the Rock.

Three years after the curse on Lumatere was lifted, Froi has found his home . . . or so he believes. Fiercely loyal to the Queen and Finnikin, Froi has been taken roughly and lovingly in hand by the Guard sworn to protect the royal family, and has learned to control his quick temper with a warrior’s discipline. But when he is sent on a secretive mission to the kingdom of Charyn, nothing could have prepared him for what he finds in its surreal royal court. Soon he must unravel both the dark bonds of kinship and the mysteries of a half-mad princess in this barren and mysterious place. It is in Charyn that he will discover there is a song sleeping in his blood . . . and though Froi would rather not, the time has come to listen.

If you read my review of Finnikin of the Rock a few days ago you know that I am utterly in love with this series. That’s why I started Froi of the Exiles right after closing Finnikin. This series is pure magic. These are some of the best books I have read in a long time and Melina Marchetta has a permanent place very near the top of my favorite authors list.

Froi has a very different feel than book one. I think it’s because Evanjalin was such a beacon of goodness and hope in Finnikin of the Rock and there’s really no one like that in Froi. This book takes place mostly in Charyn which is a hopeless and desolate place. Froi  is a dark character, or at least he thinks he is. He has a really bad past and he has a lot of trouble with his temper. His growth as a character was fantastic, though. It was done subtly so that by the end you realize that Froi isn’t the same person he was at the beginning.

Of the new characters Quintana stands out the most. She’s a little on the Crazy side, but somehow Marchetta manages to make her sympathetic, likeable, and disturbing all at the same time. She also has amazing character growth throughout the book. The other Charynite characters were very well done. They were all shrouded in mystery and you just know that they play a bigger role in the story. That kept me turning pages faster and faster. I also adore that the book is interspersed with chapters about Finnikin, Lucian, and Lady Beatriss. Their story continues on in Lumatere while Froi is away.

There were just a few tiny things that kept me from loving this as much as Finnikin of the Rock. I think that the pacing was a bit slower. In Finnikin they were on this epic journey and there was action all the time. Not to mention all the twists and turns. This book is a lot of back story. I felt a little lost during the first half of the book. I think I was a little too sleepy when I read the first explanation on why Froi was going to Charyn, so then a felt just a few steps behind for awhile. I did eventually get caught up and I think the second half of the book has a much faster pace. Things begin to fall in place and it becomes impossible to put down.

Really guys, I love these books. They are so well written and just breathtaking. Be warned that Froi of the Exiles does not end with a nice conclusion like the first book. No, it’s got a mild cliffhanger that left me reeling. I was happy to find out that book three, Quintana of Charyn releases this Fall in Australia. I will definitely be ordering it. Bottom line: READ THESE BOOKS.

Top Ten Books I’d Give a Theme Song To

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by the awesome people at The Broke and the Bookish

This week’s topic is top ten books I want to give a theme song to. I’ve been planning this one since it was announced! So, if I really love a book I find everywhere. Especially in songs. Music and books go hand in hand for me, although I can’t listen to music and read at the same time. But nothing reminds me of books more than music. Nothing inspires me with my own book ideas than music. I’ll stop rambling. Here’s my list:

All links go to Youtube!

1. The Hunger Games — Song: Butterflies and Hurricanes by Muse
It’s about stepping up and changing the world. Perfect. I also think that Assassin & Uprising by Muse are very good THG songs. I was sad to see that Muse isn’t on the soundtrack at all. They are the perfect fit for all things dystopian.

2. New Moon — Song: Breathe by Breaking Benjamin
I reread New Moon during a big Breaking Benjamin phase and OMG does this song fit perfectly with this book. They were made for each other.

3.  Delirium — Song: Resistance by Muse
This song is very obviously about 1984 by George Orwell, but it fits Delirium so well. Plus, it’s one of my favorite songs ever.

4. The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer — Song: Drumming Song by Florance + the Machine
This song….just everything about it is amazing. As is Mara Dyer. The overall feeling of the song just reminds me of Mara. Rabbit Heart also feels very Mara-esque to me.

5. Sloppy Firsts –Song: Sprawl II (Mountains Beyond Mountains) by Arcade Fire
This one just kind of came out of nowhere and reminded me of Jessica. A girl that is stifled by where she lives? Yes, that’s Jessica Darling. There’s also a line in there about sitting on swings and kissing in the dark…Jessica and Marcus! (The video for this song is soooo weird!)

6.  Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows — Song: Little Lion Man by Mumford & Sons
I was talking about Mumford & Sons on Twitter awhile back and Shannon from Stalking the Bookshelves sent me a link to this video about Ron Weasley….Now I cannot hear this song without thinking of stubborn, stubborn Ron. It’s a great fit. If you are a Harry Potter fan watch that video! It really, really well done.

7. Where She Went — Song: Suburban War by Arcade Fire
This reminds me of Adam and Mia:
“Now the cities we live in could be distant stars
And I search for you in every passing car”
It’s such a melancholy and heart wrenching song. Exactly like Where She Went.

8. The Calling — Song: All Nightmare Long by Metallica
Characters in the Darkest Powers and now the Darkness Rising series always seem to be running for their lives. (Oh and Metallica is one of the greats bands ever…)

9. Ballads of Suburbia — Song: Grind by Alice in Chains
This song is the epitome of the harshness of the 90′s grunge scene. There’s a lot of songs mentioned in Ballads, but this is the one I think of.

10. Crank–Song: Sober by Tool
No explanation needed. (Also, Tool is one of greatest bands ever….just FYI. Can you tell who my two favorite bands are?)

Review: Stay by Deb Caletti

Release Date: April 5, 2011

Clara’s relationship with Christian is intense from the start, and like nothing she’s ever experienced before. But what starts as devotion quickly becomes obsession, and it’s almost too late before Clara realizes how far gone Christian is—and what he’s willing to do to make her stay.

Now Clara has left the city—and Christian—behind. No one back home has any idea where she is, but she still struggles to shake off her fear. She knows Christian won’t let her go that easily, and that no matter how far she runs, it may not be far enough….

I’ve read several books about abusive or just unhealthy relationships and some were good, but none of them ever felt completely believable. Stay by Deb Caletti is the exception. This is a breathtaking book in so many ways. It’s realistic and beautifully written. It’s not just about a unhealthy relationship. It’s also about family and forgiveness.

The way the story is told was one of my favorite parts. The chapters alternate between what is happening now and what happened in the past with Clara and Christian. This makes it feel like the story is building to a slow fever pitch. You know that eventually Christian is going to catch up with them, but you just have to read faster to see what happens. In the mean time there are lots of other elements to the story. Clara and her father have some very important things to work out and they both need to forgive themselves for things that were outside their control. There might also be a chance of new love.

I really, really liked Clara. Sure, she had a skewed view of her relationship, but I resonated so well with that. I had a really bad relationship once. It took me a long time to figure out just how unhealthy it was. It was very much like Clara and Christian’s, just without the creepy factor. It never escalated that far, but their dynamic felt like reading  my own past. I also really enjoyed the other characters. Her Dad was great and all of the secondary characters played a big role. They were all really fleshed out.

This was my first Deb Caletti book and I have no idea why I waited so long. Her writing is gorgeous! Stay is the most poignant and well written contemporaries I have read in a very long time. I can’t wait to dive into Caletti’s other books.

Blogger Tips & Tricks

If you follow me on Twitter you have probably noticed that I’m a tiny bit obsessed with Pinterest. It’s my go to time killer now….Honestly, I go to it when I should be doing other things. (Which reminds me, if you are going to Pin things while at work you should probably turn the Facebook option off. My boss caught me….) (and now she follows me on Pinterest so I can’t get on it at all at work! It’s so horrible.)

Anyway, one of my favorite non book blogs, Kevin and Amanda, recently did a tutorial on how to add a Pin It button to your posts. You can follow the link below to see the tutorial. She goes over how to do it in Blogger and WordPress, but there’s an even easier WP option. A plugin! Does all the work for you. That’s also linked below.

Review: Wolves, Boys, and Other Things That Might Kill Me by Kristen Chandler

Release Date: May 2010
Age Group: Young Adult

IBSN: 9780142418833
Blurb:
It‘s K.J.’s junior year in the small town of West End, Montana, and whether she likes it or not, things are different this year. Over the summer, she turned from the blah daughter of a hunting and fishing guide into a noticeably cuter version of the outdoor loner. Normally, K.J. wouldn’t care less, but then she meets Virgil, whose mom is studying the controversial wolf packs in nearby Yellowstone Park. And from the moment Virgil casts a glance at her from under his shaggy blond hair, K.J. is uncharacteristically smitten. Soon, both K.J. and Virgil are spending a lot of their time watching the wolves (and each other), and K.J. begins to see herself and her town in a whole new light.

I, like many others probably, has the slight misconception that this book was paranormal. I hadn’t given it much thought since its release in 2010, but when I was scanning the bookshelves a couple of weeks ago this new cover instantly caught my attention and I had to buy it. Then I had to read it, which is kind of unusual for me because books that I buy usually find themselves on my shelf for a few months before I get to them. Not this one.

I didn’t adore the book like I wanted to, but it was a fast enjoyable read. K.J. was a odd main character. I never really connected to her. She was awkward and often fumbled through the day. I didn’t mind that as much as the fact that I never felt any passion from her. She was supposed to love the wolves and have this huge crush on Virgil, but I never felt any of that.

Thankfully the setting and outdoorsy-ness of the book made up for what K.J. lacked and I still really enjoyed it. If you are looking for a fast, fun read this would be a good one.
