Cover Changes Part 2

I did a post about cover changes two weeks ago, but there were so many that I left out! So, I decided to do another one:

Cover changes happen. I’ve come to terms with that. Sometimes I don’t always understand them but I assume that the publishing industry knows a lot more than me. That doesn’t mean I can’t have an opinion and a preference. So I want to point out some of the cover changes I adore…and the ones I do not. Whether it be repackaging or new covers for paperback. Feel free to state your opinion as well.

If it ain’t broke…

I definitely like the first cover much, much better. The new paperback one makes me think paranormal and that isn’t at all accurate.

Fury by Elizabeth MilesFury by Elizabeth Miles new cover

The original cover is eye catching and gorgeous. Plus, I think it fits the story so well. The new one is plain in comparison.

Chime by Franny BillingsleyChime by Franny Billingsley new cover

This one makes me sad. The original cover was beautiful, dark, and magical…everything the book is. The new one just looks kind of weird. The pale girl and the green…it doesn’t work for me. I love the hardback cover and I wish they would have kept it. Is it the same model on both?

Dani Noir by Nove Ren SumaFade Out by Nova Ren Suma

I know they are trying to appeal to a different audience but I still can’t help but love that first cover. I really adore it and I’ve had it on my TBR for a long time because of that cover. I do like the new one but I don’t adore it…

On the Fence:

Delirium by Lauren OliverDelirium by Lauren Oliver new cover

I really really like the original cover. I love it anytime the actual book has an image or design on it and the peak-a-boo dust jacket made it even better. I think the first cover fits the book better as well. I like the new cover okay, but I think it’s very run of mill and common.

It was love at…second sight:

I love the simplicity and uniqueness of the original cover but the new one is fantastic!

I like the first cover but the paperback one is what made me buy the book.

I have a part 3 planned because there’s soooo many! What do you guys think of these?

Comments

  1. I drffinitely hope they don’t change ‘Born Wicked’. Also the new chime cover looks kind of cheap.

  2. I agree with you! The changes on the whole were to more mundane common type covers. But I guess if that attracts more readers, more sales, enables the writer to write more books – I’d rather that. It’s not like the original cover disappears from view!

  3. I don’t like any of the cover changes! Chime was the first book I bought for my Nook Color, even though I could have gotten it for a dollar cheaper on my Kindle, I wanted the prettiness of the cover. And I dislike the new cover for Delirium, and for that matter the sequel. I have no idea what some of these publishers are thinking!

  4. I hate it when they change the covers… most of the time it’s the original cover that I’ll always connect with the book. But it’s still so interesting to see these changes. Lovely post – thanks a lot for sharing. :)

  5. I do hope they never change the Mara cover. It’s just perfect the way it is.

I’m also with you on the cover change for Fury. The old one was very eye-catching. It was actually what made me interesting in the book, with the “literally” flaming red hair and all. The new one doesn’t represent at all what the book is about.

I kind of like the new Delirium cover more than the old one, but I get what you’re saying about it being plain. It really doesn’t make a good representation of what the story is about, plus the girl’s face is just so…erm…big.

    • It is…big. I do like it, I just don’t think it’s the best fit for the story.

The original Fury cover is so amazing! I love her hair. I really, really wish they wouldn’t have changed it.

  6. You could totally do a weekly Fearure out this!!! Worse than cover changes are title changes! lool Like with Fade Out and Dani Noir?? But I LOVE the first cover! It’s great and unique!

I like both Between Shades of Grey covers.. But you are right, the new one has a paranormal feel to it!

  7. Okay, the original Nova Ren Suma one was SO COOL! Why would they change that?! It looked very, well, noir.

  8. I totally agree about all of them except Between Shades of Grey. I think it’s just that I don’t find covers with inanimate objects intriguing. I can see what you mean about the second making people think paranormal, but that wasn’t what I first thought — though I know what the book is about, so, lol. I think the new cover seems kind of sad and tragic, like she’s been left outside in the frigid winter too long, which is fitting :\ But if they ever change the Mara Dyer covers I will HAVE WORDS with S&S lol. Fun post! I look forward to part 3.

  9. i agree with you on most of these, esp the dani noir one. the cover and title are the main things drawing me to that book and the new cover doesn’t do anything for me at all. it just looks like every other teen book now. i did buy the between shades of grey paperback though. i don’t know if it has anything to do with the story but i like it and i like the pb price. :)

  10. I completely agree with you. New Shades=paranormal. Fury=boring. Chime=mucho weird looking.

I absolutley loved the old cover for Delerium, especially the actual cover (not dust jacket) of her face. I was really looking forward to how they continued this look. But they had to change and make it look like every other YA book out there (even though it does look good).

    • I LOVE when any book has an actual image on the book and not just the dust jacket. It would have been great to see how they continued that with Delirium… :(

  11. I agree with the ones you disliked, especially Chime and Fury. The new cover for Chime just looks freaky and the new Fury cover is so blah compared to the original. I can’t say I agree with the new ones you loved though. I bought both Please Ignore Vera Dietz and Wolves, Boys and Other Things… because of the original covers, and was not pleased that they changed them for the paperback. The new covers are just too mainstream for me I guess.

  12. I was so sad about the change with Between Shades of Gray – the first cover was so good! The new cover is way too close to her eye, and it just doesn’t fit with the book…I was surprised about the Fury cover too, because I thought the first cover worked perfectly with the story.

Completely agree about Mara & BW — Both are too stunning to change, so hopefully they won’t!  :)

  13. The change to Between Shades of Grey makes me sad. The new cover looks fluffy and doesn’t say anything about the story whereas I thought the original fit very well.

I also dislike the change to Delirium. The trend to change an original design to match the popular close-up girl face is boring.

  14. I like all of the first covers better except for on the last 2 books. I really hope they don’t ever change the cover for Mara or Born Wicked too!! They are fabulous the way they are!!
