Top Ten Books That Were Totally Deceiving

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by the awesome people at The Broke and the Bookish

This week’s topic is: Top Ten Books That Were Totally Deceiving (those covers or titles that don’t fit the books, a book that was totally different than its summary, or those books you thought were going to be fluff that turned out to be more serious etc etc.)

Kiss Crush Collide by Christina MeredithVampire Academy by Richelle MeadLiar by Justine LarbalestierImaginary Girls by Nova Ren SumaUnearthly by Cynthia HandThe Difference Between You and Me by Madeleine GeorgeTen Things We Did by Sarah MlynowskiThe Water Wars by Cameron StracherSupergirl Mixtapes by Megan BrothersDarkness Becomes Her by Kelly Keaton

1. Kiss Crush Collide Christina Meredith
This book was compared to Perfect Chemistry in the description. It sounded like a romance. It’s not. It’s very much about family turmoil with a little bit of underwhelming romance. I think I would have enjoyed the book much more if the summary wouldn’t have been deceiving.

2. Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead
I put off reading these books for a really long time. Based on the title and the original cover I thought they were just another fluffy vampire story like House of Night. Boy, was I wrong.

3. Liar by Justine Larbalestier
I think that it’s impossible to not be deceived by this book and I mean that in the best way possible. This book is completely incredible. Unless you’ve seen a spoiler there’s no way that you will know what is going on. It’s awesome!

4. Imaginary Girls by Nova Ren Suma
I had no idea going into this that it was magical realism. It was a very pleasant surprise for me because I love magical realism.

5. Unearthly by Cynthia Hand
I thought this was just one of those fluff angel books. I don’t like angel books. I’m still very thankful that I gave this a shot.

6. The Difference Between You and Me by Madelaine George
I thought that this book was going to focus on the relationship a lot more, but it’s really more about growing up and coming into your own. It’s very good.

7. Ten Things We Did (and Probably Shouldn’t Have) by Sarah Mlynowski
I thought this was going to be a little on the fluffy side, but it was so much more!

8. The Water Wars by Cameron Stracher
I loved this cover and the description sounded so good, but the book was nothing like the cover or the description. It was very disappointing.

9. Supergirl Mixtapes by Megan Brothers
I knew that this wasn’t a fluff book, but I had no idea that it was going to deal with such heavy issues.

10. Darkness Becomes Her by Kelly Keaton
Based on the original cover I though this book was going to be just another paranormal book, but it completely knocked my socks off. I wasn’t expecting it to be so awesome at all.

  1. I’ve heard that about Kiss Crush Collide, that it was compared to Perfect Chemistry but not to think that at all; which is a nice warning for me since I’ve not yet read it but LOVED Perfect Chemistry.  And I totally agree about Ten Things We Did, it seemed like a quick breezy read but it is definitely so much more!

  2. Wow, Liar sounds amazing – adding it to my wishlist! I’ve heard a lot of people say they didn’t like Kiss Crush Collide because of the comparison to Perfect Chemistry, so I’ve been wary of reading it. Maybe if I adjust my expectations, though, I’ll be able to enjoy it! Also really want to read Then Things We Did, Supergirl Mixtapes, and Imaginary Girls! Great list :)

  3. I really need to read VA series… I just mentioned on another blog that I’ve never been much interested in reading them because the covers don’t draw me in at all! But I keep hearing how awesome they are and I’m really starting to wonder what I’m missing out on.

  4. I would have thought exactly the same thing about Kiss Crush Collide- looks like a romance! I keep hearing good things about Vampire Academy which makes me think I should give it a go! Great list!

Thanks for dropping by my blog earlier! x

  5. I was totally and completely pleasantly surprised by Unearthly as well!
I’ve had Justine Larbalestier on my TBR list for awhile. Maybe Liar is the one I should pick up!

  6. Liar was such a good book! The original cover could have been even more deceiving since they started out with a white girl!

  7. Man, when you had the cover for LIAR, I thought you were going to say you included it because of the whitewashing controversy of its first cover – THAT was definitely a case of cover art being deceiving, but in the BAD way! LOL!

I’m actually going to get started with this meme, although I’m not sure how I’ll get ten (I read a lot of romance novels, whose covers are pretty much entirely deceiving or have no content whatsoever).

  8. Of all the books you chose, I have only read the VA series (and I agree with you dead on) so I am really glad you have pointed out the others! I knew of them, but yes, there are things that have been giving me pause w/ each one. I feel like giving them a shot now:)

  9. I am really looking forward to Supergirl Mixtapes! And I agree on Ten Things We Did… It wasn’t at all what I expected.

  10. I had the same reaction to VA! I thought, “No way am I reading these – the title, the original cover….all awful, these are going to suck.” BUT I’m so glad people talked me into them – they are amazing! Best vampire books out there in my humble opinion.

  11. I’m still working on my list, but Liar is one of the first ones I put on there.

  17. Ok I definitely have some books to add to my to-read list.  And I agree about Kiss Crush Collide.  They needed to chose a totally different cover.

  18. What a nice list of books! I actually haven’t read any of them, but I’ve had my eye on a few. Thanks for both the warnings and the encouragements to either read or skip some of these. :) And thanks for stopping by my blog earlier!

  20. I think everyone hates the covers for Vampire Academy. I totally agree with Unearthly, I thought the exact same thing. The orginal cover for Darkness Becomes Her is just so boring. I am glad they changed it!
    Great list. :)

  21. Oh, I just LOVE Unearthly.
Haven’t read Kiss Crush Collide yet and am scared to since so many did not particularly care for it.

Also? Totally want to read Liar. I LOVE SURPRISES!

  22. I think I need to bookmark this page so that I remember to check out Liar as soon as possible!
Damn, I am in love with The Water War’s cover too, maybe I should expect the worse and maybe it will be better than expected.

  23. Ooh I didn’t realize Supergirl Mixtapes was a heavier type of book. Interesting! I own Darkness Becomes Her but still haven’t read it so maybe I have some bias against it or something. Will have to bump it up the queue! The Imaginary Girls cover is so pretty, yet deceptive. I have the hardest time describing that book. Yes to Unearthly and VA too – completely agree!

  24. I had a hard time getting sucked into the Water Wars because it wasn’t entirely what I was expecting from its summary. :/

  25. Can’t wait to get around to 10 Things…

  26. I agree with you about Unearthly- I wasn’t initially going to read it (though I thought the cover was pretty!). But I am so glad I did. Big fan of the writing and the story. I’ve got Ten Things…and Supergirl Mixtape on my TBR- looking forward to them

Thanks for stopping by my top ten this week :)

  27. Wow, I am really looking forward to reading Imaginary Girls, Liar, and especially Unearthly! Those all sound great. Nice TTT! New follower as well!

Would love it if you could check out mine. Thanks!

  28. Unearthly made my TTT list too- It is a much better book than this cover, or the other angel books out there. And I have Darkness Becomes Her out from the library, but haven’t been able to get myself to open it, for the same reasons you note. I will try this week now! Thanks for the nudge :-)

  29. Loved Vampire Academy and agree it was so much more than HoN. Definitely on the same page about Water Wars. It sounded so good but it was painful to get through. Such a disappointment.
