My book choice is The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky

1. Ballads of Suburbia by Stephanie Kuehnert
Hands down one of the best realistic YA’s ever. Like Perks, it’s about friendship and it’s a coming of age story, but with some very serious undertones.

2. Willow by Julia Hoban
A very good issues book.

3. Looking for Alaska by John Green
Really, any book by Green would be great for fans of Perks.

4. Crank by Ellen Hopkins
Another good issues book.

5. Will Grayson, Will Grayson by John Green and David Levithan
Quirky characters and friendship!

6. Please Ignore Vera Dietz by A.S. King
I really think any fan of Perks would find this book incredible (because it is) and vise versa.

7. The Miseducation of Cameron Post by emily m. danforth
A beautiful coming of age story! I loved it so much.

8. John Belushi is Dead by Kathy Charles
This book doesn’t get nearly as much attention as it should. It was so unique.

9. Saving Francesca by Melina Marchetta
Another great one about finding yourself and friends.

10. Pink by Lili Wilkinson
I really adored Pink.

  1. I have so many of these on my TBR, but haven’t actually read any of them *hangs head in shame*. I am waiting on my library to get a copy in for Perks of Being a Wallflower – I saw the movie trailer, and it made me want to read the book, like, yesterday. Looks so good.

Great list, and I look forward to reading a bunch of these!

  5. Interesting list! There are actually a few on this list that I haven’t heard of, like Saving Francesca, and then a few others I’ve been meaning to get to, like Crank. I’ll have to check some of these out sometime.

  6. I LOOOOVE Ballads of Surburbia and Looking for Alaska (and Perks)! I am so glad you shared this list, Lori. It is a GREAT one! I am always looking to find more contemporary YA. I think BALLADS is one of those books that is so, so unappreciated and it sucks – I’m really happy you put that one on your TTT. I also particiapted this week; feel free to check mine out when you have time. :)

  7. Gosh, all of these sound sooooo good. Maybe I’ll have myself a little realistic YA reading-only month. September, maybe? Yeah, I think I will!

Love this list, can’t wait to read them all. : )

  8. Okay so I am hanging my head in shame. I haven’t read any of those. In my defense, I just really started reading contemporary a few months ago. I will have to get to some of these. They sound really good.

  9. Hi! So, I haven’t read any of the books on your list yet (I know! I know!). In my defense its hard for me to want to read contemporary with more “serious undertones” as you put it because I like to read about romance, fantasy, sci fi and fairy tales! haha I like happier books. But I know that the Perks movie comes out soon so I will need to finally read it. Who knows, if I end up liking it I’ll always have your post to point me in the right direction after! :)

  10. Perks is one of my favorite reads! It’s so beautiful and deep. I’ve only read Saving Francesca from your list, but I loved both it and Perks, so I have a feeling I’d love all of these as well! I’m not a huge contemporary reader, but lately I’ve been reading more of it and have found some amazing reads!

I thought Wallflower was brilliant, but so depressing. I suppose that’s my gripe against YA:  I wish it wasn’t so bleak. Don’t they make any cheery YA?!   ;->

    Here’s my
    Top Ten.
I hope you will stop by!

  12. I don’t do much YA, but I’ve had The Perks of Being A Wallflower on my TBR list for a long, long time. Long enough to be embarrassed about it. I think your post gave me the kick I needed to bump it up in the queue. Nice post!
