Cover Changes

Cover changes happen. I’ve come to terms with that. Sometimes I don’t always understand them but I assume that the publishing industry knows a lot more than me. That doesn’t mean I can’t have an opinion and a preference. So I want to point out some of the cover changes I adore…and the ones I do not. Whether it be repackaging or new covers for paperback. Feel free to state your opinion as well. This is Part 5 of what is turning out to be a very ongoing post. (There’s just so many changes) Click for Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4, and Part 5.

For the better?

I’m pretty much in love with that new cover. I’m thankful that I never got around to buying a finished copy, because now I want that one.

I LOVE the new one! The original goes with the story well, but I’m just not a fan of the gold and brown.

The Modern Fairy Tales series by Holly Black

I honestly like the original one better. They’re both good…but I prefer the butterfly to the greenish girl.

I really like the creepiness of the original! Plus, you kind of can’t tell what’s going on with it so you have to take a second look. I think the new one is just weird looking.

There seems to be about 1 million different covers for this series, but I can say without any hesitation that I don’t really like any of them. The first one and the third one are too cutesy for the story and the middle one’s colors are horrible. I like the concept of the middle one. I think it gets the closest to fitting the story, but those colors! I would love it if they repackaged them again with some really awesome covers, because it’s a really awesome series.

I like both of the but the new one is the one I would stop and look at in the bookstore.

  1. I’ve played too much Sims, but the new cover for Tithe looks a bit more like an alien than faerie. I like the new Scorpio Races cover. Makes me think of the Lascaux Caves. But I already have it in the old cover, which I had no issues with.

  2. I liked The Scorpio Races original cover. I don’t know, I just like really simple covers that people would consider boring. But I feel like the new cover represents the wildness of those horses better and it’s more MG-YA looking. I have the UK cover, which I LOVE.

A.S. King’s been getting some nice cover changes. I love the one they did for ANTS. I think both are hugely successful though. I agree with the other opinions you shared too…

  3. oh I actually like the original cover of The Scorpio Races, and like you, the dairy queen series have weird covers but if i had to pick i would choose the last one. The rest of the covers I actually prefer their originals

    great post!

  4. Maybe I’m just being Ms. Cranky-Pants but I like the originals of all of them better. The last three–the YA’s–are all too similar, where they were rather distinctive before. And the MG’s are too MG now. But I do like that fancy silver award sticker on Maggie’s awesome book!

  5. I’m pretty much in love with new cover for The Scorpio Races. A little piece of me wants to get a copy for my shelves, despite having one of the first already. And I totally agree with what you said about The Poison Eaters and Everybody Sees the Ants! I always look forward to these posts from you, Lori. : )

  6. I like both covers for The Scorpio Races. I don’t think I really like one better than the other. I liked the original cover of Tithe much better. It think the new one is weird looking. I also like the creepiness of the original cover for The Poison Eaters.

  7. I like both of The Scorpio Races covers too! They both go well with the story. I also like both to Liesel & Po, although, I would prefer the hardcovers to both, hee hee!

  8. One of the reasons Dairy Queen is something I haven’t picked up is because of the covers. I’ll take your word for it that the book is great but agree that they need a good redesign. The new Liesl & Po is really cute and I like both Scorpio Races covers. I like the new Everybody Sees the Ants cover but the real problem for me is the title. Nice cover comparisons, Lori!

  9. I like most of the new covers, except for the Holly Black one. It’s a hit or miss gamble. I love looking at covers.

  10. I agree with all of your choices but Everybody Sees Ants. The first cover is so striking. The second one, ehh.

  11. Oh dear. I like all the original ones MUCH better. I wish they wouldn’t change covers so much – the first covers are almost always the best!! :( But oh well…I guess we’ll still read them, won’t we? ;)

    Great post!

  12. Adore the new Liesl & Po cover! Completely agree about The Poison Eaters and Tithe. I love both covers for The Scorpio Races, but I still favor the hardcover because it just looks cleaner (I’d love the paperback more if it didn’t have the quote at the top).

    Nice post!

  13. I love the new look for Liesl and Po!!!! I haven’t read Dairy Queen but there are lots of covers which can get really annoying.

  14. I like the original of all of them except –
Scorpio Races (love the new one)
Dairy Queen (like the middle best, but they’re all bad like you said…haha)
