Top Ten Books That Made Me Think

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by the awesome people at The Broke and the Bookish

This week’s topic is: Top Ten Books That Make You Think (About The World, People, Life, etc.)

1. Love is the Higher Law by David Levithan

This is just an incredible book. It’s filled with Levithan’s usual incredible insights that always make you think. It’s also about 9/11. I was a freshman in high school then. I was old enough to know it was bad, but not really old enough to grasp the magnitude of how unbelievably bad it truly was. This book really gives you a different perspective, 3 actaully, on that day and the weeks after.

2. Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson

Speak is just a remarkable book. Plain and simple.

3. The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

It’s hard not to see similarities between the our world and Katniss’. It’s very poignant

4. Forbidden by Tabitha Suzuma

I really adored this book and whether you loved it or not, you have to admit that it gets you thinking about some things you don’t normally think about.

5. The Giver by Lois Lowery

This was my very first experience with dystopia. I think we read it in 6th grade? I was just in awe of this book. It definitely makes you think about the freedom we have in our lives.

6. Eating Animals by Johnathan Safran Foer

This is a non-fiction about factory farming. I read it because I had some thoughts about becoming a vegetarian. It’s been almost 3 years since I read it and I haven’t ate meat since.

7. How I Live Now by Meg Rosoff

This book is kind of scary in this could happen kind of way.

8. Anything that A.S. King writes

Her books always have a very important issue in them like bullying or sexual abuse. They are very thought provoking.

9. The Adoration of Jenna Fox by Mary E. Pearson

Jenna Fox is just a great read! It brings up stuff like how far is too  far and the role that science should have in life.

10. If I Stay by Gayle Forman

You can’t read this book without giving some thought to how you would choose.

  2. It’s funny, I put If I Stay on my list too, but not because of Mia’s choice. I was thinking about everything that led up to that moment, and how people may have acted differently if they knew what was coming. Either way, definitely a thought-provoking book. I considered Hunger Games too, but it wound up getting bumped. I have a few of these on my TBR. Making this week’s list was exhausting.

  6. If I Stay was such a thought-provoking read – it had me thinking for days afterwards about what I would do in the same situation. And Forbidden – I loved that book so much despite the fact that I thought the subject-matter would completely turn me off, but it certainly made me think!

  15. Really great list! I agree with a ton of these: The Adoration of Jenna Fox, Forbidden, the Hunger Games, Speak, the Giver… the only book I’ve read by AS King is The Dust of 100 Dogs. Not her most popular book, but I really enjoyed it. Want to read Please Ignore Vera Dietz next. Anyway, thanks for sharing!

  16. These all sound really good! Interesting that you have a 9/11 book on your list (considering it’s today). Interestingly also, every single person I know that has read Eating Animals has stopped eating meat. I don’t know if I should try it, considering my already dismal diet…

  17. So many great books on here with so many great messages! The Giver especially; I wish I had remembered this one for my own list. I first read it in middle school and then reread it a while ago as an adult… there are so many things that it makes you consider and really think about! I’ve also seen many people list If I Stay! Really must read it. Great list Lori!

  19. WOW! What an awesome array of books your chose Lori. I had no idea there were 2 Speak’s in the YA world. I did read the one by Laurie and LOVED it!!! I cried and cried. And The Hunger Games….well, enough said! You’ve raved about A.S. King so much. I need to make time to read her books. And I really really want to read the Adoration of Jenna Fox now. I will have to go and dig out my copy this afternoon. Great choices!!!

  20. If I Stay really does make me think, and I still think about it, even though it’s been a year since I read it. I debated over whether or not to choose THG, but there’s no doubting that it’s an incredibly thought-provoking book.

  22. We have at least one book in common! I was seriously considering The Hunger Games too but it got booted for Shatter Me. I haven’t read most of these though I did get A.S. King’s book after reading your review on it. I just need to find the time to read it.

  23. I’ve never read Eating Animals because it came out once I was already vegan but I’ve heard really good things about it and I’m glad it made such an impact on your life :)

Speak is a book that really made me think, too!
