Cover Changes

Cover changes happen. I’ve come to terms with that. Sometimes I don’t always understand them but I assume that the publishing industry knows a lot more than me. That doesn’t mean I can’t have an opinion and a preference. So I want to point out some of the cover changes I adore…and the ones I do not. Whether it be repackaging or new covers for paperback. Feel free to state your opinion as well. This is Part 7 of what is turning out to be a very ongoing post. (There’s just so many changes) Click for Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4, Part 5, Part 6, and the Omnibus edition.

I was never a huge fan of the cover, but I liked that it was boy friendly. I really like the new cover. It’s not a huge change but I think it adds so much to it. It’s not as plain.

This hurts my heart. It really does. The first cover is one of my favorites…ever. I even included it in one of my first Cover Changes posts under please don’t ever change. Well, it did and the new one is bad in my opinion. It looks like it should be a book about physics.

I like both of these just fine…but what’s up with that cellphone? It’s a little dated isn’t it? Do they still make those?

I’m not a huge fan of either, but the new one is better I suppose.

I’m on the fence with this one. I love the weirdness of the first cover. It’s very unique. The more I look at the new one the more I like it.

What do you guys think?

  2. Born Wicked?! Noooo! That’s one of my top covers of the year! :’(

  3. The original Born Wicked cover is an all-time favourite of mine as well. I absolutely LOVE it. I like the paperback version, but the original is by far still my favourite and I wish, wish, wish that it was here to stay! Don’t fret, your not alone there. Some cover changes are welcomed and much needed but this was not the case with Born Wicked. I just wish they had admired it’s beauty and continued on with covers but alas… :(

  4. The new Legend cover is nice but is not really different! I agree with you on Bon Wicked, the first one was unique and stoot out!
Now, The Space Between. Well, I don’t like either of the covers. Both, do not manage to grab me but if I must vote, I think I like the first one a little more..

  5. Penguin just has a terrible habit of changing covers. ALL THE TIME! It’s like they can’t decide what they like or something. I’m good with the LEGEND cover overhaul – I think the new one looks good. But I’m totally with you on BORN WICKED. Like…why would they do that? Everyone loved that cover, I feel like. It just…doesn’t compute in my brain why they would want to go with a new one. lol

  6. The Born Wicked one is disappointing, the first one is so evocative.

And the new Ashfall looks like they copied the US cover of Code Name Verity!

  7. No! No! No!

Not Born Wicked! My books won’t match anymore… I hate it when that happens.

  8. Born Wicked‘s original cover was STUNNING! :( Why mess with a good thing?

That said, I’m on board with the changes to Ashfall & Legend. Especially Legend. I don’t know, there was something about the original I never liked.

The Space Between’s new cover is a huge downgrade. I haven’t read the book (I KNOW, I KNOW!), but if I walked into a bookstore and saw the new one, I definitely wouldn’t be inclined to pick it up. The original cover was so different and unlike anything out right now.

D’aww, that cellphone. They really should have kept the original. It was cute and fun and the new one is just boring. Also, I think that showing any phone would have eventually dated it.

  9. I’m glad I’m not the only one who loathes the new Born Wicked cover. The first one was 100% perfect. The new cover for Legend does kind of work better, there is just a bit more to it which is nice. Thanks for sharing.

  10. I really liked the original cover for Legend, I suppose I would have to see the new one in real life to make a decision on my opinion of that. I almost cried when I saw they changed Born Wicked. I loved the original. It was so pretty! I like both the covers for The Space Between, but I think the original is better.

  11. I have to say I actually really like the change to Born Wicked. The original cover never really stood out to me but this new one pops. It’s screams “magical girl” and catches my eye.

As for The Space Between I don’t really like either of them.. but then I could easily have been spoiled by our UK cover under the name “Smoulder” which is lovely.

  12. I really like the old Born Wicked cover too. I have not read it yet, but I think I will either in English or when it comes out in Swedish. Luckily we got the better cover in Swedish :)

  13. I was so disappointed when I saw the new Born Wicked cover. Maybe because I am not a 12 year old girl but it certainly seems to me that will be the only demographic it will appeal to. And it may look more Magical but the cheesy (not real) kind of magic as opposed to the beautiful natural (could be real) kind of magic in the book.

  14. I agree they should not have changed Born Wicked cover.. It was such an awesome cover in the first place..
And I agree I liked Legends, coz it`s boyfriendly.. But don`t mind the new one.. Looks quite alike, but with a bit more movement and life to it :) If you ask me..

  15. I really like the new Legend cover but the change of cover for Born Wicked is disappointing. I haven’t read it but the new cover looks so generic and I just wouldn’t recognise it being the same book that I read reviews about.

  16. I haven’t yet read Born Wicked, but I totally agree. The original cover is gorgeous! And why they would change it to that – I have no idea!

  17. I like the new cover from Legend. It’s great that they changed it, but not so much that it’s a total new cover :)
Born wicked is a shame. I love the old cover. The same for The space between. The new one is not ugly, but it’s so.. standard.

  18. I’m so pissed about Born Wicked’s cover change too. >.< But I still have my pretty hardcover so that's fine. I just hope the cover for the second book is just as pretty.

  19. I agree the new cover of Legend adds a bit more interest. I can’t stand the new cover of Born Wicked. I think it is really cheesy. Sad but true. I bought the new cover of Ashfall and I like how it matches Ashen Winter now. As for The Space Between cover I personally prefer the hardcover one. Fun post. Thanks!

  20. Oh, gosh. HEART. HURTS.
The cover of the original Born Wicked was one of my favorites! It’s so beautiful and the color is just GORGEOUS. I’m loving the change for Legend though. I liked the original too but I’m leaning towards the new one a little more.

  21. I definitely do not like the new cover for Born Wicked, the older one was one of my favourites too! The others aren’t so bad, except for the one with the cell phone.

  22. I actually like the new cover for Legend too, because it looks a lot… grittier. Tougher. More interesting. The first one is all pretty and shiny, and I like it too, but the new one is nice.

I’m sad about Born Wicked because the first cover is BEAUTIFUL.

  23. For all of these, I like the original covers better! But like you said, I guess the publishing industry knows what its doing and had a good reason to make the changes! Very interesting post – I loved reading your comments!

  24. Jaime Lester says:

I am super freakin pissed about the Born Wicked cover change. The new one is awful. The first one is beautiful and one of my favorites. The other one that bothers me is The Space Between. I loved the original cover. The new one isn’t bad but it is hard to see one of my favorites change!
