In this stunning sequel to the highly acclaimed Daughter of Smoke and Bone, Karou must come to terms with who and what she is, and how far she’ll go to avenge her people. Filled with heartbreak and beauty, mysteries and secrets, new characters and old favorites, Days of Blood and Starlight brings the richness, color and intensity of the first book to a brand new canvas.

reviewtagIt’s not often that a sequel completely outshines the first book for me, but that was the case with Days of Blood and Starlight by Laini Taylor. Daughter of Smoke and Bone was one of my most anticipated reads of last year. While, I definitely loved it, it lacked the extra oomph that I was hoping for. That all encompassing feeling that amazing fantasy books give me. Laini’s book of short stories made me feel like that and so did this one. This book sucked me in and didn’t let me go throughout the entire thing. Enthralled is the perfect word for it.

I don’t want to get into the plot line too much, but it definitely went in a direction that I wasn’t expecting. It was never ever predictable to me. That’s not something I say very often. I had no idea what was coming and I was surprised at every turn. Days of Blood and Starlight is also a lot darker than the first book. The tone is very bleak, but there’s the subtle bursts of pure hope that you can actaully feel right alongside the characters.

I think the reason that I probably found this one even more enjoyable is because we get to explore the world so much more. Karou’s mysteries have been revealed and so we get to experience a lot more of Akiva’s world. Our world and the world of the angels and chimeras might be one of the  inventive things I’ve ever read. It just blows me away, you guys. I love it so much. Even if it is a scary scary place.

I expect amazing writing from Laini Taylor and she certainly delivers in Days of Blood and Starlight. It’s filled with the same mesmerizing prose. I really loved the way the story unfolded too. It was detailed and rich. The pacing was perfect. I was dying to find out what happened, but I never wanted it to end.

Obviously, I loved, loved, loved it. It was an extraordinary sequel. I can’t recommend these books enough. So read them if you haven’t!

  8. I have been on the fence about reading the first book for awhile. Some people loved it, some hated it and I wasn’t DRAWN to it. But I’ve been hearing such great things about the sequel already, I definitely am going to pick up the first one! Thanks for helping me make up my mind!!!!!! :)

  9. The positive reviews have me so excited for this book! It almost never happens that the middle book in a series is better than the debut – very impressive. And the dark and unpredictable aspects you mention appeal to me. My preorder should hit my kindle late tonight- yay!

  10. Personally I thought that Daughter of Smoke and Bone was pretty much perfect. If you didn’t think so, and if Days of Blood and Starlight was better for you, that makes me even more excited to read this book for myself! Seriously, I am in awe of Taylor’s writing abilities and so looking forward to a book where we get answers, or at least more details about this fantasy world that she created. I am glad that you enjoyed this book so much! :)

  14. I totes wish I loved the first book more to be so excited for this one, you know? Or at least as excited as everyone else. A part of me did love this book. Traditionally it has all the elements I love in a book. Most are executed really well. Yet at the same time there was something missing. maybe it was the romance…? I just couldn’t love it the way so many people seem to. AHHH! It’s so frustrating, but I hope this one BLOWS MY MIND. ;D

  15. your opening line (and you know, everything else about your awesome review) is spot on. why is it so rare for us to feel that love and amazement with stories in the sequel books? there was something that was so all-consuming about this one. i still didn’t fly through it. i just treat so slowly through laini’s writing, but that’s so not a bad thing.
