Do certain elements in books ever bother you? I’m not talking about bad writing or stupid MC’s. I’m talking about the little things…The little things that drive you crazy. Here’s some of my pet peeves. (Please note that these are silly pet peeves and they never actually keep me from liking a book)
Unnaturally yummy smelling boys
Example: ‘I leaned in and was instantly engulfed in his natural scent. It was like windswept aspens in Alaska and pure man. It was intoxicating.’
You guys have noticed this, right? It seems to happen most often in supernatural or paranormal books, but I pretty sure I’ve read it in contemps too. I don’t like it. I just really can’t buy into it. Even if he’s a werewolf. When I was a teenager boys smelled like Axe, cigarettes, or sweat. Sometimes all three. The ones that were trying hard smelled like Tommy Hilfiger or CK. They never smelled like the ocean, crisp snow, the forest, vanilla, or dew.
I released a breath I didn’t know I was holding.
I honestly don’t have a huge problem with this one. I think it’s a good way to show the tension in a situation. Although, I can’t ever recall holding my breathe without realizing it, but I’ve never found out that my boyfriend is a blood thirsty vampire. So I can’t take issue with how one reacts to that. What I do take issue with is how often this phrase is used because that is lots. You’d think authors could come up with a different way to show tension…
YA girls don’t cry.
I don’t know how many times I’ve read the line ‘I never cry’. Many, many times. Some people don’t cry that much, I know. What I don’t like is that this line is used to show how strong the character is. So just because you shed a few tears every once in a while you are a weak person? It’s not okay for girls to cry anymore? I know that’s not the case with every book, but I just don’t see why it even has to be brought up. Probably because the MC always cries after she tells us this.
What annoys you?
