Blurb:Rae’s always dreamed of dating a guy like Nathan. He’s nothing like her abusive stepfather—in other words, he’s sweet. But the closer they get, the more Nathan wants of her time, of her love, of her…and the less she wants to give.
As Rae’s affection for Nathan turns to fear, she leans on her friend Leo for support. With Leo, she feels lighter, happier. And possessive Nathan becomes jealous.
Then a tragedy lands Rae in the ICU. Now, hovering between life and death, Rae must find the light amid the darkness…and the strength to fight for life and the love she deserves.
I’ve been a big fan of Lisa Schroeder for a long time now. I couldn’t have been more excited about her first non-verse YA book. Lisa’s writing is always gorgeous and poignant, but does that hold up in Falling for You? I’m happy to say it does. You won’t be disappointed in this book.
Rae has a tough life, to say the least. Her home life is pretty horrible. Her mother continuously chooses her stepfather over her, and her stepfather is a pretty vile man. He treats Rae more like a slave than a stepdaughter. You can’t help but get outraged at the situation. Rae is a strong character though. She handles it all well.
On top of her bad home life she gets involved with Nathan and quickly realizes he is not all that he seems. He’s possessive, selfish and just a little creepy. I wanted to shake some sense into Rae several times, but it’s realistic that she stuck it out with Nathan. She’s lonely and pressured by her friends.
All through the book you get small chapters of a future event with Rae in the ICU. This added a lot of suspense to the story, because you don’t know how or why she’s there. It made it impossible to put the book down. If you think you might miss Lisa Schroeder’s beautiful verse, don’t worry! Rae writes poetry and the book is interspersed with her lovely and heartbreaking poems. They added so much depth to the story.
Falling For You was a gorgeous book. I can’t recommend it enough.
