I’ve had this post sitting in my drafts for over 2.5 years. Seriously. I meant to write it after Finn’s newborn days but it was hard to get anything done back then. So I’m revising it for things that have been essential for Rowan and us in the first 3 months. Every baby is different, of course, but these are items it wouldn’t hurt to have on your registry or wishlist. I’ll include some of the things that we only needed for Finn at the end.
Any sort of nursing pillow is a miracle those first few weeks or months. Your achy arms and shoulders are not something you expect to complain about post childbirth but you will if you don’t use a pillow. I used my Boppy Nursing Pillow with Finn (my oldest) for almost 2 years. He liked to nap on me. I really only use it once or twice a day with Rowan now. He doesn’t like to camp out at the boob like big brother did.
The swing had been Rowan’s favorite place to nap. Even now at almost 5 months he likes to hang out in it and snooze. We have the Fisher-Price My Little SnugaMonkey Cradle ‘n Swing and it’s held up great for both boys.
Rock ‘n Play Sleeper
This is the biggest new thing we got for Rowan and I’m so happy we did! He slept in it every night for the first 2 months. We got the Fisher-Price Newborn Auto Rock ‘n Play Sleeper. The auto rock was a fantastic feature to have. He slept very well in this and probably still would. I ended up transitioning him to the pack n play at 2 months because I was worried about his head getting flat(er).
I feel like these swaddle pods were so very important the first 2.5 to 3 months of Rowan’s life. He liked to be swaddled but I’m not very good at getting a swaddle blanket tight enough. That’s the beauty of these! You just zip them up in it. It’s like a little cocoon. He was so snug and content as soon as I zipped them up at night. We started out with the SwaddleMe Pod and then moved up to the Comfort & Harmony Woombie Peanut Air Swaddle after he out grew the newborn ones. I’ll be posting about what we used to transition out of the swaddle soon, but I really can’t recommend the pods enough.
Any mom to a newborn or infant is going to worry. The Snuza really gives me peace of mind. It’s a motion sensor that hooks to the front of the baby’s diaper. If it doesn’t detect any movement in 15 seconds an alarm sounds. It’s very reassuring.
This is a super handy weird product. I heard about it at a mom’s group when Finn was around a year old. I remember thinking ‘I wish this would’ve been around a year ago!’ From birth to sometime between 3 to 4 weeks Rowan had some trouble with gas and pooping. The Windi Gas and Colic Reliever to the rescue. How does it work? Well…you insert it rectally just like a thermometer and it helps the gas escape. Sounds totally weird, right? When you have a screaming baby at 2am you will try anything. And this actually works!
I’ve been breastfeeding for almost 3 years straight now. I don’t have to pump often but I learned when Finn was a baby that I get more milk with my Medela Harmony Manual Breast Pump than with my electric. Any breastfeeding mom knows it’s all about how much you get! I’ve only used my manual this time around.
I have a Tula carrier that I absolutely adore, but I wanted something for the tiny newborn period. A ring sling is perfect. Its easy to use and comes with instant sleepy dust for the baby. I have the beautiful one pictured above from Bibetts on Etsy.
Earth Mama Angel Baby Products
I have loved every single EMAB product I’ve used…and I’ve used quite a bit. The Natural Nipple Butter Nursing Cream was fabulous for sore nipples the first few days. The Mama Bottom Balm was great for other sore areas. I have absolutely loved the Baby Bottom Balm Diaper Cream for both Finn and Rowan. Plus, their Third Trimester Tea and Milkmaid Nursing Tea are wonderful. Can you tell I love EMAB?
As promised, here are two things that were essential for Finn’s newborn days. All babies are different so we didn’t need or didn’t use these items as much with Rowan.
Finn would nurse hours and hours and hours. Doing so much sitting on the couch was a huge shock for me. I did have a lot of time for reader, though. One handed reading. I won a Fire Tablet from Bewitched Bookworms just a couple of months before Finn was born and it was such a lifesaver. Reading was as easy the second time around. Rowan nursed and slept on me a lot but it’s hard to read when a toddler is destroying the house. 😉
I think I’ve mentioned before that Finn was a colicky, fussy, and generally unhappy baby, right? Well, he was and honestly, most of the time nothing helped. There were a few occasions where Mommy’s Bliss Gripe Water worked some sort of magic. It might not always work but it never hurts to have it on hand.
Hope this helped you if you are an expecting parent or in search of a baby shower gift! Be on the lookout for my 3-6 Month Essentials list soon.
