We can’t all love everything and some books just aren’t for me. Sometimes I try really hard to love a book but if it’s taking me 4 days to read 100 pages, we need to have the talk. Book Breakups is a semi regular feature where I discuss books that I DNF. I link to positive reviews as well.
I was so excited to read The Serpent King. Everyone seemed to love and it was set in my home state. I had 2 very big issues with the book right away. One was…what exactly was the book about? I couldn’t tell you. I made 150ish pages in and still had not discovered a plot. It was annoying. My other problem was that the book is full of Southern stereotypes. FULL! You would think that since the author lives in this state that he would try to break out of that mold that portrays southern people as dumb, poor, and racist. I was pissed. Of course, I knew that some of these topics might come up since the MC’s father was a snake handling preacher. But it seemed like every side character in the story fit one of those stereotypes. I couldn’t get past that so I happily gave up on this one. No guilt whatsoever. I was also excited to read this author’s second book, but I’m not sure is I will now.
I love books with witches and magic. I was super excited about A Shadow Bright and Burning very early on. I got pretty far in this book. It had so much promise, I just waiting for things to take off. In the meantime, I was falling asleep after 2 or 3 pages. It was not holding my interest. I did skim just a little to see of things were going to pick up but decided to put it down. I did like the magic and the MC. It was just too slow to hold my attention.
