Kell is one of the last Antari—magicians with a rare, coveted ability to travel between parallel Londons; Red, Grey, White, and, once upon a time, Black.
Kell was raised in Arnes—Red London—and officially serves the Maresh Empire as an ambassador, traveling between the frequent bloody regime changes in White London and the court of George III in the dullest of Londons, the one without any magic left to see.
Unofficially, Kell is a smuggler, servicing people willing to pay for even the smallest glimpses of a world they’ll never see. It’s a defiant hobby with dangerous consequences, which Kell is now seeing firsthand.
After an exchange goes awry, Kell escapes to Grey London and runs into Delilah Bard, a cut-purse with lofty aspirations. She first robs him, then saves him from a deadly enemy, and finally forces Kell to spirit her to another world for a proper adventure.
Now perilous magic is afoot, and treachery lurks at every turn. To save all of the worlds, they’ll first need to stay alive.
A Darker Shade of Magic has been on my TBR for way too long. Way way too long. I let the hype get to me when book 3 was released earlier this year and finally ordered the book. I’m so glad I did because Victoria Schwab has created a dark and magical world that I would’ve been sad to miss out on.
The book has so much info and world building to do at the beginning. It could’ve easily been bogged down or boring, but I think Schwab set everything up so well. There was no info dumps. The history and story was set up slowly. I was definitely drawn in from the very start. I love magic in books, but there never seems to be as much as I want. That wasn’t the case with A Darker Shade of Magic. There’s tons of magic and even magical fights. It was amazing. I had major heart eyes while reading all of those scenes. The magic definitely didn’t disappoint.
The characters were super fascinating. I liked Kell a lot. I loved that he wasn’t all powerful. His powers were amazing, but he wasn’t ruthless so he didn’t always win. I liked that about him. I’m also anxious to see him grow and learn more about his past. Lila was a perfect compliment to him. She was so ruthless and funny! Her personality really jumped off the page. I can’t wait to see her character develop more as the series goes on as well.
I really loved everything about A Darker Shade of Magic. Especially the unique world and magic. I’m anxious to read the rest of the trilogy, and V.E. Schwab’s other books.
