We can’t all love everything and some books just aren’t for me. Sometimes I try really hard to love a book but if it’s taking me 4 days to read 100 pages, we need to have the talk. Book Breakups is a semi regular feature where I discuss books that I DNF. I link to positive reviews as well.
I received this book for free from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
I was so so sooooo excited about this book. DRAGONS! Who doesn’t love dragons?! No one, that’s who! I read some reviews for this one that made me so anxious to read it. I bumped it straight to the top of my huge TBR and was untimely disappointed. This is one of those fantasy novels that just drops you in the middle of a story and only explains things in little bits and pieces. I’ve read and loved many books that do this, but I could not get into this one. It was too full of unlikable or uninteresting characters. The way certain characters and the dragons were treated was infuriating. I had no motivation to pick the book up. I DNFed at 30%.
Readers that love dragons and The Last Namsara:
I must admit that the pretty dress cover and Bookstagram hype got to me on this one. I was a little hesitant after reading reviews that said it was way more of a romance than a fantasy novel. Those fears were quickly confirmed once I started the audiobook. The world sounded awesome, but it was overshadowed by brooding characters and sexual tension. I LOVE romance in books but I don’t like romance novels and that’s really what this felt like. I wanted cool storms but there was way more staring at each other’s lips. I DNFed at about 25%, so things could’ve improved but I was bored.
