Scream meets YA in this hotly-anticipated new novel from the bestselling author of Anna and the French Kiss.
One-by-one, the students of Osborne High are dying in a series of gruesome murders, each with increasing and grotesque flair. As the terror grows closer and the hunt intensifies for the killer, the dark secrets among them must finally be confronted.
International bestselling author Stephanie Perkins returns with a fresh take on the classic teen slasher story that’s fun, quick-witted, and completely impossible to put down.
I must admit when I heard that Stephanie Perkins was publishing a slasher movie inspired book I was surprised, but also a little thrilled. I absolutely LOVED the Anna and the French Kiss books, and while this seemed way different than those, I knew Stephanie Perkins was going to rock it. I wasn’t wrong.
There’s Someone Inside Your House is almost a Scream retelling. I grew up in the 90’s and Scream was a huge movie with my group of friends. We loved it! This book brought back so many of those feeling for me. It was nostalgic. That might be strange to say since it’s kind of gruesome, but oh well. Perkins did stray away from the Scream plot line enough to always keep me guessing.
I enjoyed the characters in the book a lot. Makani was a fascinating character. I wasn’t sure about her at first, but she quickly grew on me. She has secrets and a mysterious past that kept me intrigued. Sometimes Big Secrets can be a bit of a let down when they’re revealed but I thought Makani’s lived up to all of the build up.
Makani’s group of friends was also fabulous. They were a diverse group and I loved their banter. I must also mention that Makani’s grandma is amazing. She was definitely one of my favorite characters.
I’ve seen quite a few reviews complaining about the amount of romance in this. That boggles my mind a little. First, most YA has romance. Second, even slasher movies have romance — Scream, for instance. Third, this is a Stephanie Perkins book! She wrote The Anna and the French Kiss trilogy. She is a queen of amazing, swoon-worthy romance! Of course this book was going to have romance! I like Makani and Ollie together. They definitely had chemistry. I had a hard time figuring Ollie out and I liked that! He wasn’t your typical YA boy.
This paragraph might be a little spoiler-y. I’m not going to mention any names but I just wanted to warn you. I was super surprised that the killer was revealed so early. I was expecting this to be a guessing game until the very end, but instead the killer is revealed somewhere around the halfway mark. The story was still captivating but I felt like it did lose a bit of its spark after that. I kept waiting on a twist or a second killer — thanks Scream. It left me the tiniest bit disappointed.
That being said, I still really enjoyed There’s Someone Inside Your House. It was creepy and gory but also romantic and funny. What’s not to like about that?
